GYM SHOES - Parents, please help your student be prepared and safe during physical education by providing athletic shoes that can be securely fastened. Keeping a pair at school is best. If this is not possible, please have them bring or wear a pair to school on PE days. This will allow them to fully participate in all activities safely. * No Crocs, dress shoes, flip flops, sandals, winter boots, hiking boots or slip on shoes of any type.
CLASS SIGNAL - PE teachers use a variety of ways to gain a class's attention. I use music. The students are taught to start and stop with the music. When the music is on, it is the students' time. They start their activity, get water, go to the bathroom, etc... When the music is off, it is my time to talk and students stop and listen for directions.
WATER BREAKS - Students can get drinks anytime the music is on or at the end of class. This way they have a choice to either stop playing or waiting until the end. I don't allow drinks during my time when the music is off. Students need to be in the gym listening to me at that time or they'll miss out on important instructions. On occasion, I have to remind students that the drinking fountain is for getting a drink, not taking a shower! We don't allow students to stick their heads under the fountain to wet their heads and cool off. It leads to wet floors which are slippery and a safety issue to others.
BATHROOM USE - There are bathrooms located just outside the gym doors. Students must ask for permission, take the bathroom pass hanging next to the doors and go one person at a time. Again, bathroom breaks are to be taken on the students' time during an activity when the music is on. This way they don't miss any important directions when they are gone.
ENTER & EXIT GYM - Students are greeted outside in the gym hallway each day. Here they are given directions for starting class. Students are expected to follow the line leader into the gym and go directly to the designated area to await further instructions. When PE is over, I will stop the music to gain their attention and then give them the options of helping clean up equipment, getting drinks or going to line up. Once in line, students should face forward and keep hands/feet to self. There are no cuts or saving spots in the line. If a student leaves the line, they must go to the end when they return.

REFLECTIVE WALK - At times students will come up to me "tattling" on another student. If an effort to help teach students the valuable social skills needed to work through minor conflicts, I have developed the reflective walk. If a student has an issue with another student they must ask (take) the "offending" student on a reflective walk around the gym. There are posters in the gym that will help guide the two students through the issue and come up with a solution. Once students agree to the solution they can leave the reflective walk and return to the activity. If a student refuses to go on a reflective walk when asked, that student (who is usually the guilty one) has an immediate 5-minute time out. The same holds true if a student leaves the reflective walk before agreeing to a solution. If students cannot work out an issue, they may ask me for help. I will not settle the dispute for them, but rather offer suggestions that the two parties may want to consider.
CONFLICT CORNER - The Conflict Corner is conflict resolution guide for students. When students find themselves in a conflict with others in class, they can make their way to the Conflict Corner and work on finding a solution together. The visual has become a part of my classroom procedures: when students cannot find a quick solution to their problem (e.g. rock-paper-scissors), they make their way to the Conflict Corner. It took some time to get the habit formed in all of my classes, but it has had an awesome impact on my behavior management in physical education!
